Jamaat-e-Islami rejects Punjab defamation law as ‘black law’

Karachi – On Sunday, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman denounced the Punjab defamation law as “black law”.

In a statement, the JI chief stated that this law was passed in the dead of night, and Jamaat-e-Islami was the first party to oppose and reject it.

He stated that the departure of the Punjab governor from the country, which allowed the acting governor to sign the Punjab Defamation Act 2024, raised numerous concerns.

The JI chief emphasised that the acting governor’s signature on the defamation bill constituted a restriction on free expression.

Hafiz Naeem held both the PML-N and the PPP equally responsible for the creation, approval, and enforcement of the Punjab defamation law.

He denounced the defamation law as an infringement on the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

Hafiz Naeem also reaffirmed the Jamaat-e-Islami’s support for the Journalists’ Joint Action Committee.
