Moana 2 first trailer out: Dwayne Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho return for another adventure. Watch

Disney’s sequel film Moana 2 is planned to hit theaters on November 29. The project was first conceived as a television series.

Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho return for another adventure in Disney’s sequel film Moana 2, and the first trailer for the animated sequel promises an exciting journey. (Also read: Moana 2: Disney shares new still from sequel and confirms Dwayne Johnson’s return)

On Wednesday, Disney unveiled the first trailer for Moana 2, the much awaited sequel to the 2016 animated success. Auli’i returns as Moana’s voice, and Dwayne reprises his role as Maui.

Adventure at Sea
While the teaser doesn’t reveal much about the plot, it does provide a glimpse into all of the excitement and action packed into the second chapter. It depicts Moana embarking on another sea trip after discovering a call from her ancestors to “sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean”. It reunites Moana and Maui three years later for a grand new adventure with an unexpected company of mariners.

The images highlight the amazing water animation, with a stunning scene of Moana floating in front of a whale shark.

The video also features Moana’s rooster Heihei and pig Pua. But this time, Pua appears to be accompanying Moana on her journey. After some fans questioned the decision to keep the pet in the first film, the directors appear to have made a well-thought-out move.

At the end of the teaser, Maui triumphantly appears aboard Moana’s boat and, in allusion to the story of the previous film, asks her, “Why didn’t you bring the pig last time?”

David G. Derrick Jr. wrote and directed this animated picture, which will be released in theaters on November 29. The project was originally planned as a television series before being modified into a theatrical sequel. It includes new songs by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear. Prior to the trailer’s release, Disney revealed the first official poster for Moana 2, which depicts Maui’s fish hook on the beach with Moana in the backdrop.

Disney is also working on a live-action Moana version with filmmaker Thomas Kail. Dwayne Johnson will star in the picture, which is expected to be released on July 10, 2026.

In the original film, Moana leaves her home island of Motunui on an adventure across the sea, aided by Maui, a shape-shifting demigod. The film was a success for Disney in 2016, collecting $687 million worldwide. It received two Oscar nominations.
