When Salman Khan became first Indian to donate bone marrow, saved a little girl’s life: ‘That’s why God is kind to him’

Salman Khan, one of India’s highest-paid stars, frequently makes headlines for his personal life. Earlier this year, he made news after being shot outside his Mumbai residence. Salman made headlines in 2010 for donating his bone marrow to save a little girl’s life, just days after pledging to Marrow Donor Registry India (MDRI) to donate his bone marrow if the need arose. He had stated, “People are suffering from sickness, and I thank Salman Khan for stepping forward and taking up our cause. Salman had read four years ago about Pooja, a young girl in need of a bone marrow transplant. He organized his entire football squad to donate marrow. Unfortunately, they all backed out at the last minute, leaving only Salman and Arbaaz (Salman’s brother and actor Arbaaz Khan) as the first contributors.

Addressing the issues that impede bone marrow donation in India, Salman noted at the time, “We barely have 5000 donations right now. It’s not just a lack of awareness; our mindset is also a problem. This will make us responsible for the lives of our patients. Donate marrow to save a life. It’s just like a blood test and doesn’t take long. I know some people are afraid of blood testing, but it’s time to be a bit daring and make a great difference.

‘Salman Khan is a good human being.’
In a 2022 interview with Bollywood Hungama, actor Suniel Shetty praised Salman and said that he donated his bone marrow. He had stated, “Salman Khan is a good human being, which is why he speaks in such way. What have I done for him? I did nothing. Many years ago, Salman Khan donated his bone marrow to someone. That’s a man who wants to see change in society, which is why God is so gracious to him. God is looking out for him. “He is God’s favourite child!”

Salman recently made headlines after informing Mumbai Police that he believes the Lawrence Bishnoi gang carried out the shooting at his Galaxy Apartments house in April of this year with the goal to kill him and his family members. The actor’s testimony is part of the chargesheet filed by police in a Mumbai court in connection with the event.
