Saad Rafique demands withdrawal of NAB amendment allowing 40-day remand

LAHOREKhawaja Saad Rafique, a prominent PML-N leader, has called for the withdrawal of a recent amendment to the National Accountability Ordinance that permits an accused’s remand period to be extended from 14 to 40 days.

In a statement on the social media platform X, the former minister described the NAB law as a black law created by a despot [Pervez Musharraf].

He emphasized its historical usage by military, civil, and judicial tyrants to achieve their own objectives, stressing that many innocent people had been victims of it.

Rafique stated categorically that approving the NAB bill was unacceptable, calling the lengthening of the remand period from 14 to 40 days disgraceful.

He demanded that the amendment be withdrawn.

On Monday, the ruling PML-N changed the NAB Ordinance, extending an accused’s remand duration from 14 to 40 days.

Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani signed the NAB (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, while Asif Ali Zardari was on a private travel to Dubai.
