A personalized collectible coin is being given in memory of the late British singer-songwriter George Michael.
The British Royal Mint announced on Monday that the new coin honors Michael Jackson’s 1987 hit solo single “Faith” and features the singer sporting his signature sunglasses.
Sandra Deiana, an artist and sculptor, created it, and Michael’s estate officially approved it.
“George Michael is a global superstar whose work has inspired and influenced generations with his music and his unique style,” stated Rebecca Morgan, director of Collector Services at The Royal Mint. “From his debut with WHAM! to becoming one of the bestselling solo musicians of all time.”
We are thrilled to be launching an official UK coin honoring his life and legacy, since he is adored by millions of admirers worldwide,” the statement read.
Before starting a prosperous solo career, Michael gained notoriety in the 1980s with Wham! He passed away on Christmas Day of 2016 at the age of 53.
39 years after its release, Wham!’s timeless 1984 holiday hit “Last Christmas” at last achieved the “Christmas Number 1″ position on the UK music charts in December.
The new coin, which will be on sale starting on Monday, is the most recent in the Royal Mint’s “Music Legends” series, which has already honored David Bowie, Elton John, and Queen with coins.
