Tesla recalls Cybertruck over ‘trapped pedal’ issue seen in owner’s viral TikTok video

Tesla has recalled 3,878 Cybertrucks to address a “stuck pedal” issue highlighted in a TikTok video released by owner Jose Martinez last week.

According to a Tesla file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a pad on top of the Cybertruck’s accelerator pedal may fall away and become trapped in the interior trim, resulting in unintended acceleration.

Tesla’s service staff intends to replace or repair the accelerator pedal assembly free of charge to owners.

In a defect notice, Tesla stated that a “unapproved change introduced lubricant (soap) to aid in the component assembly of the pad onto the accelerator pedal.” Residual lubrication weakened the pad’s grip on the pedal.”

According to the complaint, Tesla first became aware of this vulnerability on March 31, 2024. Tesla opted to execute a voluntary recall of the Cybertrucks on April 12, according to the document.

delivery of the Cybertruck have been slow, with less than 4,000 units sent since CEO Elon Musk began delivery at a launching event on Nov. 30, 2023, according to the documents.

The business reported dismal first-quarter vehicle deliveries in 2024, totaling 386,810 automobiles. This marked an 8.5% reduction from the same quarter last year. Tesla publishes its first-quarter profits on Tuesday.

On April 14, CNBC inquired with the NHTSA about the trapped pedal issue on the Cybertruck, following Martinez’s video, which boosted public notice of the flaw and accidental acceleration.

A NHTSA spokesman stated on Monday that the agency had received three vehicle owner complaints regarding the Cybertruck and was aware of the video. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claimed it “uses many data sources in its enforcement processes, including social media and vehicle owner and other related forums.”
