Today 1st January is the anniversary of the passing of the well-known Patiala singer and musician Akhtar Hussain Khan (1896–1974).
He was a musician and classical vocalist who belonged to one of the subcontinent’s main vocal gharanas.
Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, the well-known Pakistani classical music duet, were his sons and students.
Khan performed classical music and worked as a supervisor at Radio Pakistan. Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, a well-known vocalist, is also descended from him.
He was a skilled vocalist who was especially good at singing the “Ram Sakh,” a unique Raag of the Patiala dynasty.
Akhtar Hussain Khan is interred in Lahore’s Mominpura Cemetery.
