Kiran Rao denies breaking up Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta’s marriage, despite popular belief that she was the other lady.
Kiran Rao has stated that her affair with ex-husband Aamir Khan “absolutely did not” begin while they were together on Lagaan (2001), yet it is claimed that she prompted his divorce from Reena Dutta. In an interview with Zoom, Kiran revealed that she started dating Aamir while assisting Ashutosh Gowariker on the set of Swades (2004), when Aamir was working on Mangal Pandey. Kiran Rao says she is still referred to as ‘Aamir Khan’s wife’.
Kiran clarifies that she wasn’t dating Aamir during Lagaan.
Kiran Rao stated, “Many people believe that Aamir and I connected on Lagaan, but we didn’t. Aamir and I met during Swades; he was about to shoot Mangal Pandey at the time. We had recently completed a pair of advertisements with Ashutosh Gowariker for Coke, which is when Aamir and I reconnected. 3–4 years after Lagaan. I was not in contact with him. In fact, on Lagaan, I scarcely communicated with him. I was actually seeing someone else throughout Lagaan. When Aamir and I started dating in 2004, everyone assumed that it began while we were filming Lagaan and led to our divorce, which was not the case.”

Aamir and Reena Dutta’s marriage ended in 2002, a year after Lagaan was released. Speaking about how she and Aamir sought couple counselling after their marriage, Kiran said, “When you marry someone who has been in another relationship, you carry baggage that will damage your relationship. I definitely recommend couple counseling. Aamir and I attended couple’s counselling. It becomes a neutral ground where you can talk about your wants and how you perceive the other person, which was quite good to me. It helped that Aamir and I agreed that we both needed to be honest with each other, regardless of the circumstances.”
Kiran and Aamir got married in 2005 and announced their separation in 2021. Aamir co-produced Kiran’s recently released second film, Laapataa Ladies. They continue to co-parent their son Azad, born in December 2011. Ira and Junaid Khan are Aamir’s children from his first marriage to Reena.
